Evening all,
Here's my little old mini.
She's a 1989 Austin-Rover mini 30th anniversary special limited edition model that was made to commemorate 30 years of mini production (1959~1989).
They made 2000 red and 1000 black and it came standard with a few extra luxuries... for 1989 that is ! pioneer radio, half leather seats, alloy wheels, graphics and pearlescent paint and that's about all.
This particular car is even more unique as it was exported from new to the Isle of man (the only 30th LE I know of that did this) and was imported back to the UK in 1998 so its technically a grey import.
Its only a 1.0 litre engine making about 38bhp from the factory but then again its an engine from the 50's !
From a young age I was set on having a mini as my first (and for a while, only) car so i started searching for one when i turned 16.
I bought this car back in 2011 in a right sorry state and completely stripped and restored her with help and guidance of my dad.
For anyone who is interested, there is a 50 page build thread on TheMiniForum that details every single step of the restoration

Here's a few pics to show the extent of the work needed to get her in shape:
I rebuilt her as close to OEM spec as possible as it is a special edition but I did also do a few mods:
- 0.040" oversize pistons taking it out to a whopping 1030cc
- skimmed head with three angle stepped valve seats
- metro camshaft
- 3.65:1 final drive
- HIF38 carb with AAU needle, waxstat delete and K&N air filter
- water cooled ally intake manifold
- 1 7/8" single box exhaust with 3-2-1 LCB manifold
- high voltage coil, low resistance HT leads and triple ground spark plugs
- electronic ignition module retro fitted to distributor
- alloy wheels replicate the originals but with 1" extra dish, gold centres, polished lips
- lowered by around 75~100mm from factory height and got the arch gaps even
- Rover special arch extensions, finished in black, widened with some rubber strip and bolted on
- 2x 5.25" and 2x 6.5" GTO 602 mk2's coaxil JBL power range speakers
- JBL GT5-12 1100w sub and Ground zero iridium 540wrms two channel bridged amp
- auxiliary fog lights mounted on the grill
Never had it dyno'd but my arse dyno tells me shes pushing around 50bhp with all the mods which is plenty fun in an old mini trust me.
She's been on the road some 5 or 6 years now and it was my only car for about 12 months
I didn't like using her in all weather after I put some much work into her so now I only take it out on dry days - she's my pride an joy !
I've bought a 2011 MINI Clubman Cooper S around 4 years ago so that gets used in the bad weather but that's another story for another time !
I hope you guys approve and I look forward to seeing all your build threads on this forum
T'ra a bit,
Rhys.
